ATMIS is starting to leave Somalia, after 16 years

The Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Abdugadir Mohamed Noor, today chaired a meeting to discuss the start of the first phase of the withdrawal of the ATMIS forces operating in Somalia, which was attended by a military delegation from the African Union that is in the country to observe the task of the departure of the ATMIS army.
The Minister of Defense said that at the end of June, the first part of ATMIS will leave the country, which is 2,000 soldiers, and they will hand over the responsibility of the country’s security to the Somali National Army.

The Special Representative of the African Union in Somalia, Ambassador Mohammed Al-Amin Souef, thanked the Minister for the role of the Ministry of Defense and the government as a whole for their participation in the implementation of the transition plan and welcoming the officials who came to observe the departure of ATMIS.

The ATMIS security handover plan will continue as planned until the last soldier leaves the country by the end of December 2024. according to the resolution UNSCR 2628.
