Ankara: News coming from Turkey indicates that a fruitless outcome has emerged from a meeting convened to reconcile representatives from Somalia and Ethiopia, aimed at resolving the longstanding dispute between the two nations.

Reliable sources have confirmed that the Somali government delegation emphasized that they would not accept attempts to divert attention from the maritime agreement Somalia legally signed with Somaliland. The meeting saw a request from Ethiopia supported by Qatar, Mauritania, and Turkey, urging them to mediate between them and Somalia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Hakan Fidan, who is standing by the foreign ministers of Somalia and Ethiopia, noted that the negotiations will continue and they will come back together again.

Despite ongoing discussions, no significant breakthrough occurred between the two delegations, with Turkey acting as an intermediary. Turkish officials expressed optimism about future talks, confirming they would continue discussions with Somalia and Ethiopia, with another meeting scheduled for September 2, of this year.

The Somali government remains steadfast in defending its national sovereignty, and its stance has consistently highlighted Ethiopia’s obstructionism since the signing of the Somaliland diplomatic recognition agreement, which has strained relations with friendly nations involved in mediation effort.

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, said Turkey a close friend of Mogadishu, accepted the informal negotiations with Ethiopia, but did not produce any results.
